The enormity of the wheels in this piece evokes the importance of this invention to developments in transportation, agriculture, and industry. A grinding machine carves away at an inexpensively produced icon, ironically recycling efforts to refine it into a futile feat. The title alludes to Western ideals from the Age of Enlightenment, such as progress, knowledge, and reason, as well as the Wheel of Enlightenment, the path to reaching the highest state of being, or nirvana, in Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism.
